Farmers, Farm Groups and even politicians are getting frustrated by the growing backlog of grain shipments.

Rick White is the CEO for the Canadian Canola Growers Association and says Bill C49 offers some long-term solutions to the problem they just have to get it passed thru the Senate.

"The government has been talking to both railways, in fact, the industry and been talking to railways as well," he said. "There's not much they can do in the very short term. It's very hard to turn that big of a problem around operationally to understand that, and that's why we are focused on getting C49 passed because we think that has the teeth and has the accountability and the date requirements to bring some transparency to all this again to better plan and execute on next year's crop."

Ottawa has been putting pressure on CN and CP to explain how they intend to clear the backlog.

The rail company has plans to mobilize more train cars and workers and will also invest 250-million dollars in infrastructure to help clear the grain backlog.

CN Rail issued an apology yesterday for not meeting the expectations of grain customers and is promising to do better.

White says they want to see Bill C49 move through the Senate as soon as possible.

"That bill is something that we have been asking for quite some time and lobbying hard for," he said. "It's in the Senate right now, and we are encouraging the senators to get that bill passed as quickly as possible because there are changes in that bill that we think will help prevent this current situation from happening again next year."

He says they want it to see Bill C49 in place before the summer break in Ottawa.
