The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association held their Annual General Meeting last week in Saskatoon.

A key topic of discussion was the National Beef Check-off with the group voting unanimously to increase the National Beef Check-off.

"You look at the research side of things, it's about competitiveness and increasing the competitiveness of our herd, its about increasing carcass value and what we get when we sell things, when we sell our animals so upping the value of what we get, it's about productivity not only what were doing and doing it better against other nations," CEO Ryder Lee explained.

Lee notes it will be sometime before we see any changes since other provincial organizations still need to vote on passing the resolution.

They also had a representative from the Ministry of the Environment come in to talks to producers about predators and control said Lee, "A main take home is that if you are protecting your herd you can do that and protect them from predators but you know if your moving beyond coyotes to cougars or wolves or something like that showing up and you end up taking one of them out let your ministry of environment know they want to know where these animals are and that people that are experiencing that kind of pressure are doing something about it."

The groups AGM which came on the heels of the Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference also saw the election of Ryan Beierbach as the new chairman of the SCA Board of Directors.
