Western Canadian canola producers look toward a goal set out by the Canola Council of Canada of an average 52 bushels of yield by 2025.

Canola Council Agronomist Nicole Philp says a key part in helping to meet that goal is by making existing acres productive, by taking a look at stand establishments, genetics and harvest management.

She adds farmers are encouraged to do plant stand counts after they seed to help manage stand establishments.

"Knowing what you put in the ground and knowing what comes out is really important. Especially when you can do that for a couple years and know what you are going to get in a drier year and what you are going to get in a wet year."

"It really just helps make manageable decisions for the rest of the year. There is a big difference between managing a field with four plants per square foot versus seven or eight plants per square foot."

Philp adds soil testing and fertilizer management are also important, as famers should provide sufficient nutrients without damaging the crop.
