Farmers are busy right now with the harvest, but we can’t stress enough the importance of on farm safety at this time of the year.

Periodic rest breaks, making sure we shut off equipment to do repairs and replace all guards on the equipment are just a few of the things that can prevent a serious accident.

Sask Power is also reminding producers to look up and live, be aware of overhead power lines.

Kevin Schwing, Sask Powers Director of Health and Safety encourages producers to make sure they take the time to properly lower augers and find a safe route to bins avoiding power lines if possible.

"Everybody's rushing, everybody's fatigued, and it just takes that second to forget, so that constant reminder of where the lines are in all of the fields, in the yard, around the grain bins."

Schwing says every year someone on the farm or contracted to do work on the farm – like moving a grain bin, auger is injured or killed as a result of coming in contact with overhead power lines.

"We talk about look up and live, and it does sound like a slogan but really it's that simple when it comes to overhead lines. Look up, identify them, and then plan your work accordingly. Avoid them, pick a different route, make sure you lower your equipment if you have to go underneath them, and use a spotter to avoid contact with overhead lines."

He says it just takes a moment to be distracted and injured by electricity, it happens really quick and you don’t often get a second chance.
