Herbicide resistance is becoming more of an issue for farmers.

Eric Johnson, a Research Assistant with the Weed Management Program at the University of Saskatchewan says that right now, about 50% of prairie fields have Group 1 resistant wild oat.

He added Group 2 resistance is building as well.

"The main point is to be tank mixing different loads of action, that's the initial thing," said Johnson. "Look at diversifying their cropping system if they can. Those in the wheat, lentil rotation, it is setting itself up for a real disaster, so they might have to look at different crops."

Johnson notes that a lot of herbicide didn't go down in the fall.

"I would say be prepared. Start thinking about your weed management program as soon as you can, because I think it is going to be a real challenge this year."

According to Johnson, producers will have to start looking at some of the older products, like Avadex, Edge and Trifluralin.
