The focus was on organics Friday in Swift Current.

There are 842 certified organic producers, 28 certified organic livestock producers and 89 certified organic processors in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan grows 61 percent of the organic field crops in Canada.

Marla Carlson, the Executive Director for Sask Organics, she gives a breakdown of the products and what consumers are buying.

"89 percent of what organic consumers in Canada are buying are fruits and vegetables and then it goes down to 24 percent for organic dairy and dairy and 23 percent for organic meet."

She adds there's a strong market right now.

"Canada is now the fifth largest organic consumer market in the world. We were fourth but the growing middle class in China has meant that they have taken fourth place there in the standings."

Provincially, producers grow 500,000 acres of organic field crops, 361,000 acres of pasture and forages, 700 acres of organic fruits and vegetables and 11,700 acres of wild rice.
