There are a number of crops around the province sitting in water following this week’s heavy rain.

It will take some time to fully evaluate the impact on crops.

For farmers a key concern is the pea and lentil acres, as those crops don’t tolerate the moisture as well as cereals.

Shawn Jaques, President and CEO for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation says that the impact on crops will vary by area.

"Certainly every farm is different and we have been hearing the extent of the damage is different in the different areas. If producers have questions they should contact their local crop insurance office. We have staff that are available to help explain the options to them and our staff would be able to walk them through what their insurance options are."

Jaques, adds that producers have a couple of options to think about.

"If the damage is severe enough and the producer doesn't want to take those acres to harvest, they could file what we call a pre-harvest claim. The producer would be paid for their losses and then any of the remaining crop would have to be put to another use such as feed. The second option available to producers if they decide to leave it to harvest, once harvest complete we would measure the production and then determine what the producer would be compensated if there was a short fall in their production guarantee at harvest time."

He says if producers have questions they can contact their local crop insurance office where the staff can walk them through their options.
