In 1996, the Humboldt Collegiate Institute Mohawks senior boys basketball team was arguably the best team in Saskatchewan.

The team, which featured eight grade 12's and five grade 11's was undefeated through the 3A category en route to the school's only HOOPLA championship.

Wednesday night at the new Humboldt Collegiate Gymnasium, 11 members of that team will return and take on the current senior boys squad.

This game has been in the works for some time being the 20th anniversary of the win but it almost didn't happen following the passing of their coach, Kevin Grieman.

Kalvin Manderscheid was a member of the 1996 team.

"It was quite a shock," Manderscheid said of Grieman's passing. "Just a few days earlier we were chatting with him on Facebook in a group chat and we were talking about our alumni game we were planning. When he passed we weren't sure if we should go ahead with it, as a group we decided we should go ahead and do this in his honour."

Of course the team perfected their craft at the old HCI location but the alumni game will be at the new school. That's a benefit however as they have replaced the championship banners at the gym. They are now auctioning off the original 1996 pennant in a silent auction.

All the proceeds raised from the banner, as well as the donations taken as admission will be contributed to the Kevin Grieman Scholarship Fund.

Manderscheid added that Grieman's importance speaks volumes when 11 of the players will come to the city during the week when they have to travel and have full lives with families and occupations.

"It is nice, I am quite surprised that all the guys are able to make this. We were planning to have it Thursday night but because of scheduling conflicts we couldn't have it so it would have been easier for the guys. We got it all together and everything worked out."

Tip-off is set for 8 o'clock.
