Alphonse was born April 6, 1939, to Bernard and Anna (née Nordick) Athmer at the family home near Englefeld. On July 18, 1964, Alphonse married Loretta Beuker and they made their home in Englefeld. In 1974, they built on the family acreage south of Englefeld and raised a family of four children, two daughters and two sons.

Alphonse was a very selfless, kind, caring and loving person who always put others ahead of himself. His wife, children, and grandchildren were of utmost importance to him. He was a dedicated family man who was always there when needed.

Alphonse enjoyed farming, gardening, carpentry, curling, hunting and fishing. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and lived a life filled with passion for the outdoors. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family camping and fishing up north and on summer vacations to Barrier Lake. Many a fish were caught and campfires cherished with both family and friends. He was especially proud of his granddaughters and loved playing softball with them. He also enjoyed watching them play badminton, fly kites, and ski doo and quad around the farm.

Alphonse enjoyed many years of farming and in 1996 retired on the acreage he had built south of Englefeld. In his retirement he kept busy cutting grass, trimming trees, cutting firewood, gardening and with various other landscape projects.

Alphonse will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 59 years, Loretta (née Beuker) Athmer, four children: Audrey (Kevin Grant) Athmer, Perry Athmer, Kent (Tess) Athmer, and Erin (Chris) Beaumont and two grandchildren Kayley Grant and Julia Grant. He also leaves behind his brother Aloys (Georgia) Athmer; sisters Anne (Herb) Martin; and Rosella Rath; and sister-in-law Angeline Binsfeld, as well as other extended family and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents Bernard and Anna (née Nordick Binsfeld) Athmer; three brothers: Ed Binsfeld, August Binsfeld, and Leonard Athmer; two sisters Marie Kehrig and Louise Schmitz; three brothers-in-law: Ed Kehrig, Ray Schmitz and Matt Rath; sister-in-law Marie Binsfeld; and mother and father-in-law Leo and Juliana (née Faul) Beuker.
