The folks in Annaheim and Lake Lenore were busy with another great provincial volleyball tournament this past weekend. Annaheim served as back to back hosts, just as the Rebels served up aces in their hometown appearance. The previous weekend’s incredibly successful 1A girls’ tournament resulted in a bronze medal finish for the hometown squad. The boys’ side took aim for the podium just this past weekend.

In their Friday evening matchup against the Choiceland Cougars, the Rebels relied on their twin power towers, Dexter Rohel and Maitric Thiemann in the hitting department and solid defensive digging from the back. Both sets were close with the Choiceland crew mounting a rally when it caught the Rebels flatfooted on a couple of serves. However, the Rebels stayed the course for the back to back wins that carried them into Saturday.

In the playoff round, Annaheim defeated Lafleche in the quarterfinals only to fall to Fox Valley in the semis. That put them into the bronze medal match on Saturday in Lake Lenore where they sustained a first set loss to Edam. The Rebels would not be denied in the next two, taking their opponents 25-18 and 20-18 to secure the bronze.

Fox Valley went on to the final against undefeated Rouleau, who completed their weekend sweep capturing gold.

SHSAA representative Ryan Trumbley couldn’t say enough about the efforts of the area schools, particularly Annaheim in anchoring provincial competitions on two consecutive weekends.

“Unbelievable - Annaheim, Lake Lenore, Watson – to once one provincial championship is a heck of a lot of work, but to do it back to back weekends, it’s borderline insane. I don’t think we can thank them enough for taking this on and for just going above and beyond. Both gyms are just rocking again, everybody’s happy. And just great volleyball.”

Congratulations go out to Muenster and Humboldt Collegiate for strong showings in their 2A and 4A appearances. Of course, hats off to the Annaheim Rebels for bringing home two medals in as many weeks.
