Bertha Adelaide Ulrich
October 13, 1920 – May 18, 2022

The death of Bertha Adelaide (nee Hartman) Ulrich of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, SK, occurred at her residence on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. She was 101 years of age. Bertha was born on October 13, 1920, to Leo and Adelaide (nee Hofer) Hartman in Vegreville, AB. She was the oldest of 11 children. Being the oldest in the family, Bertha helped raise her siblings and assisted her mother with the daily household chores; however, she preferred working outside checking trap lines for weasels, snaring rabbits, and working with her horse. After completing her education at 15 years of age, she worked at various jobs close to home. At 16, she left home to find employment and support herself. Bertha married Joe Ulrich in 1943 and moved to a farm close to St. Martin’s Church. They were blessed with seven children, two sons and five daughters. Bertha lived on the farm for 41 years. She planted large gardens, cooked delicious meals, and baked endless sweets for her family. On many Sundays, one or more families would come home to Bertha’s delicious dinner and a noisy game of Kaiser. She made beautiful quilts and sewed many outfits for her children. During her down time, she loved caring for her houseplants and reading countless story books. After her husband Joe passed away in 1984, Bertha moved to Humboldt. During the next 38 years, she made new friends, went on long walks around town, spent hours doing word searches, or simply watched traffic and people go by her window. She also enjoyed watching children playing and bird watching. Bertha loved her family and continued to make meals for them until the fall of 2017, when she became a resident of St. Mary’s Villa. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the kindness and care extended to her during her last four-and-a-half years at the Villa. Bertha will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her six surviving children and 18 grandchildren: († Lawrence Ulrich) daughter-in-law Carole Ulrich and family, Melinda, and Travis (Sharon); Loretta Tameling and family, Marian (Melvin), Norma, and Gordon (Leanne); Loraine Merkosky and family, Lionel (Connie), Wanda (Rob), and Sheldon (Sheri); Trude Doepker and family, Jacqueline (Fraser), and Jeff (Erin); Eric Ulrich (Dorothy) and family, Lyle (Sheri), Kevin (Lisa), and Amanda (Mark); Linda Sarauer (Keith) and family, Jessica (Dennis), and Clinton (Laurel); and Sally Bihari (George) and family, Candice (Ruben), Dionne (Muchi), and Scott; 35 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Leo and Edwin; and two sisters: Adelaide and Eileen.
