The LeRoy Fire Department now has a set of jaws for life at their disposal thanks to a donation from BHP Billiton.

Head of Corporate Affairs for BHP Chris Ryder says purchasing the piece of equipment is a win win situation.

"We just thought it made a lot of sense, we have people living in the area, we have people traveling to and from the site so we feel a real benefit for the community in terms of having access to this and a real benefit to us as well. It just made all the sense in the world."

BHP's Jansen mine site is about 11 kilometers from LeRoy.

"This increases our rescue capabilities immeasurably and response times for those in need will be reduced dramatically. This is another great step towards a long and promising partnership between BHP Billiton and LeRoy Emergency Services," Paul Cockell, Chief of the LeRoy & District Fire Department stated in a news release.

"It's no secret that we have a lot of highway accidents in Saskatchewan," Ryder added. "It's something that we are all aware of and I think everyone wants to see reduced but in the meantime in those unfortunate times when we do have an accident we think this piece of equipment will save lives so it just makes absolute sense for us."

In the past BHP has contributed to countless communities and organizations in the LeRoy, Jansen and Humboldt area.
