The Humboldt Broncos cashed in on two points in their lone game of the weekend on Friday night.

Taking on the Melville Millionaires for the second time this season, the Broncos, backed by goalie Ben Motew, came away with a 4-1 victory.

Cage Newans opened the scoring with his 11th goal of the season, off a beautiful centering pass from Carsten Kayter for the 16-year-olds 20th point this year to put him among the league leaders in points by a defenseman.

The Broncos took a 1-0 lead into the second period where another youngster, Matthew Van Blaricom picked up his 3rd goal of the year in just his 5th game with the Broncos.

Melville scored their lone goal of the game on a screened shot from the blue-line off the stick of Aiden Robson, the lone goal that Motew would allow, stopping 26 of 27 shots faced.

In the third period, the powerplay provided the insurance.

Spencer Bell, in his first game with the Broncos after being acquired in a trade with the AJHL’s Blackfalds Bulldogs just the day prior, made his net-front presence felt, and wacked a puck out of mid air that beat Clement Labillois for a 3-1 lead. Alec Saretzky then capped off the scoring on another powerplay with his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Saretzky now has goals in four straight games.

The win propelled the Broncos to an 18-8-1-0 record and their 37 points has them in 4th place in the SJHL standings.

The Broncos have three games left before the holiday break which will start on Wednesday, December 14th when they host the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
