The Humboldt Broncos opened the 2023 half of the season with a weekend split against the Flin Flon Bombers. The Friday night New Year opener saw the Broncos fall 6-2 in a game with a wild and wooly third period littered with altercations and misconducts.
Brock Mueller opened the scoring for the Bombers almost midway through the first, but Daylan Weigel took a power play advantage to answer minutes later. It was all Flin Flon in the second with Jeremi Tremblay and Noah Houle both cashing in.
Humboldt was quick to cut the two point lead in the opening moments of the third with a power play goal by Spencer Bell. The wheels began to fall off at that point as Flin Flon notched three consecutive goals to wrap up scoring.
It was a different story on Saturday night as both teams went on defensive lockdown. Benjamin Motew turned away 28 shots to secure the shutout in the 2-0 Broncos win. The first frame was scoreless, and the sole goal in the second came off the stick of Lucas Ceccarelli with an assist by Daylan Weigel. Spencer Bell potted an empty netter in the dying minute to secure the victory.
The Bombers and the Broncos will settle the best of three run on Thursday night as the Broncos make their home ice debut for the year at the EPA. Puck drop is 7:30 and the play call will be on 107.5 Bolt FM.
