The Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce has launched a first of its' kind partnership in Canada with the non-profit group Junior Achievement.

With the agreement Chamber staff and local businesses and entrepreneurs will provide leadership for half day curriculum's for grades three to nine to learn about money, business and planning for the future.

HDCC Executive Director Deb Nyczai talks about why they wanted to get involved.

"It's really exciting, Junior Achievement Saskatchewan and Junior Achievement Canada overall is a great program teaching our youth about business skills and financial literacy and those kinds of issues. That's really important to us as a Chamber because those students are our future workforce."

In the past couple years JA Saskatchewan has helped get the information to students in about 20 Horizon School Division schools, the goal now is to reach all 41 in the HSD.

Director of Education Kevin Garinger thinks this is a great opportunity for their students.

"It's an opportunity for our kids to really appreciate the business community and what happens in business and what happens in our financial world and certainly in government in a different way. It's really a program that helps prepare our students for success in the classroom."

Nyczai adds that the agreement is a win-win situation.

"The region is so big, last year I believe there was 22 schools involved. We wanted to reach more kids and JA provincially has Saskatoon in it so it's just a big area for them to cover. We got together with them and discussed how we can help as a Chamber locally because again it fits with our mandate."

Garinger is excited for the impact it'll have on their students.

"We look forward to what that's going to look like and HSD's partnership with it is something that we continue to be excited for our students for."

Nyczai says they are seeking sponsorship from local business owners that can help with the purchase of work books for the students that will take part. Entrepreneurs can also get involved as well if they would like to take on a more interactive role within the schools across east-central Saskatchewan. Call the Chamber office at 682-4990 if you want more information. Up to 1,000 students could benefit from the program.
