Eileen Dorothy Schinkel
June 24, 1940 – April 29, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Eileen Dorothy Schinkel, age 83 years, of Humboldt, SK and formerly of Jansen, SK, on Monday, April 29, 2024.

Eileen was born pre-maturely on June 24, 1940, in Rush Lake, SK, to Roy and Olga (Eichorst) Kern, and she was referred to as their miracle baby. She was raised on the family farm with her four brothers, helping the family tend to the needs of farm life. She attended Salt Lake School, a one-room country school near Rush Lake from grades 1 to 8, then completed her schooling at Herbert High School. After achieving her grade 12, Eileen worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Swift Current before starting nurses training in Regina. However, she found her calling was to be a teacher. She attended Teacher’s College in Regina, completing her studies in 1962-1963. Her first school was Hopefield School, southeast of Swift Current, where she taught grades two to five. She then taught in Main Centre and Herbert. University classes were completed in Regina, Saskatoon, and Swift Current for two more years. Library Science, Psychology, and Remedial Reading were her major subjects. She worked in the Gull Lake School Unit libraries, Swift Current Separate School libraries, and then became the library supervisor of the Rosetown Central School Unit.

In 1976, Eileen started her courtship with Ernest. After a few months of knowing each other, they married the same year on July 31 and Eileen moved to the Schinkel family farm south of Jansen. The following year, they welcomed their only son, James. As a family they enjoyed camping trips, visiting family, and volunteering at Zion Lutheran Church and at the Community Club in Jansen. Their time was mostly spent taking care of their mixed farm and preparing meals for the family and extended family in the farming operation.

Together, Eileen and Ernest retired from farming in 2000 and moved to Humboldt. They were faithful parishioners at St. John’s Lutheran Church and helped whenever they could. Eileen enjoyed watching The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and religious programming on TV. For numerous years she enjoyed cake decorating. Recently, most of their leisure time was spent with their only grandchild, Matthew. Often they would play games, prepare lunches, and enjoy their time together. Due to health issues and allergies, Eileen enjoyed her time at home with family and friends.

In December of 2023, she suffered a stroke and was moved to Central Parkland Lodge in Lanigan, SK, a couple months later. Eileen was the last surviving child of the Roy and Olga Kern family.

Eileen will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her husband of 47 years, ERNEST Schinkel; her son James (Erin) Schinkel and their son Matthew, all of Humboldt, SK; sister-in-law Bev Kern; and numerous nieces and nephews of the Schinkel and Kern families. Eileen was predeceased by her parents Roy and Olga Kern; brothers Wilf (Shirley) Kern, Harold (Doreen) Kern, Arthur (Ruth) Kern, and Ron Kern; in-laws Evelyn (Albert) Schondelmeier, Esther (Robert) Koshinsky, Margaret (Mervin) Arnst, George Schinkel, and Bruno (Verna) Schinkel.

A Public Visitation was held on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. at Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Humboldt, SK. A Funeral Service for Eileen was held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Humboldt, SK, officiated by Pastor Clint Magnus. Interment followed at Jansen Community Cemetery, Jansen, SK. Memorial donations in memory of Eileen may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Diabetes Canada.
