In the last month or so, the flu has exploded across the province.

We went from having just a couple hundreds cases between September to January... to almost 500 in the month of February alone.

Consulting Medical Health Officer Dr David Torr explained.

"We are seeing a lot of working class people getting quite ill this season and that is the part of the population that receives probably the least amount of vaccination, many of them feel they are strong enough, they don't need the vaccine but this season we are seeing them quite seriously hit."

The numbers are pretty staggering from the last month in Saskatchewan said Torr, "since we started the surveillance in September last year, there's about 700 cases right now, the higher numbers started pretty much in February. I think in the first week alone we saw 150, then the week after that another 220, and then another 173 this past week."

The H1N1 virus is most prevalent right now and the vaccine used this year included protection against that strain of the flu.

There is still time to get the flu shot for those wishing to receive it.
