When I was in Kindergarten, I wanted to be Elmo for Halloween.

My mom and I went to a woman in town who made costumes for kids every year. However, another kid had got the only Elmo costume before I got there.

The only Sesame Street costume she had was Cookie Monster - but that wasn't the Muppet I loved. It wouldn't do.

Instead, I picked Humpty Dumpty. It was a good match for my then more portly frame.

I still remember parading that costume around school before going to the Halloween party in the gym.

For the next few years, I was Superman. We bought the costume at the old Saan Store. When we bought it it was too big for me - but at least we didn't have to buy another costume for a few years and we could buy candy instead.

I really liked that costume and I was upset when it no longer fit.

Around Grade 4 or 5 I went as a jailbird. My aunt thought it would be funny. But it wasn't so funny to sweat all day long because it was so warm. I was so glad I only wore that costume for that year.

For many years after that we didn't buy costumes, so I just grabbed some mini sticks and a helmet and called myself a hockey player.

The last time I dressed up was two years ago when I went as a baseball player. After so many years of not having a costume, I just decided not to wear one.

I won't be wearing a costume this Halloween but I will still be taking my little sister trick-or-treating - so if I come to your house, please still give me candy.
