As teachers received the news that schools are projected to open to students in the fall, they are also gearing up to return this spring to complete the supplemental learning activities provided to staffs after the closure of schools on March 20 . The Horizon School Division has reopened their schools to teachers on a limited basis.

The school division issued a guideline document that states teachers may return to schools to work on a voluntary basis between June 8 and the end of the school year June 26. The guidelines also provide for staff at the Division’s central facility to return to their offices.

In a video statement, Director of Education Kevin Garinger highlights the priorities in staff returning.

“Safety is our number one priority and we thank our staff members for their efforts to ensure the health and safety of themselves and their co-workers at this time.”

Teachers may still work at home, but for those who require the resources or technology available through their schools, the guidelines support that transitioning to their classrooms or offices.

The document also notes that staff members must consult their principal or supervisor before they are permitted to re-enter the facility. Children or family members of staff may not enter the school or division building at any time. Only Horizon School Division staff may enter Division owned facilities.

Additionally, the guidelines provide clear times for entry and cleaning and hygiene procedures when it comes to common touch surfaces. Facilities are limited to single entrances and exits in each facility with all others remaining locked. Sign in and sign out procedures will also be in effect.

During the summer months, regular summer maintenance will be performed. This year’s routine will include deep cleaning and disinfection in preparation for an anticipated return of students in the fall.
