The Notre Dame Hounds scored in overtime to collect a 2-1 win Saturday night spoiling the opening night of the 45th season of the Humboldt Broncos.

After a slow start in the opening minutes the Broncos found their legs gathering a number chances in the period but veteran netminder Alexi Thibaudeau stood his ground stopping all 11 Humboldt chances.

Rookie Brett Friesen stopped eight Hound opportunities in the opening 20 minutes.

The Hounds got to Friesen early in the second period, last season's Kramer division rookie of the year Evan Werle slapped home his first of the year on a power play giving the visitors a 1-0 lead 28 seconds into the middle frame.

The Broncos would draw even before the period was out, rookie recruit Daniel McKitrick picked the puck from teammate Jarrett Fontaine, split two Notre Dame defenders before lifting it top corner past Thibaudeau for his his first Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League goal.

The goaltenders continued to come up with save after save each helping to earn their team a point in the first of 58 games this campaign.

Overtime didn't take long, Tyler Podgorenko jumped on a loose puck in the Broncos' slot and beat Friesen to give the Hounds the extra point and bragging rights heading into Sunday's rematch.

Friesen finished with 31 saves on 33 shots, Humboldt directed 35 chances on Thibaudeau just getting the one past him.

The Hounds were 1/5 with man advantage, Humboldt was 0/3 while on the power play.

Game time Sunday from the Duncan McNeil Arena in Wilcox is 7:30. The pre-game show of KMK Sales Limited Broncos' Hockey begins at 7:15.

Elsewhere Saturday night in the SJHL, the Melfort Mustangs picked up a point in a 5-4 overtime loss in LaRonge, Weyburn completed a home and home sweep of the Yorkton Terriers with a 5-3 win, Jake McMillen scored late to give the Battlefords Stars a 3-2 win in Kindersley and the Nipawin Hawks squeaked out a 5-4 shoot-out win in Flin Flon over the Bombers.
