Humboldt Collegiate Institute has produced its fair share of quality athletes over the years. This year has been no different with numerous athletes and teams collecting accolades and championships throughout the year.
HCI held their Annual Sports Banquet and Awards on Tuesday, June 11th where many of those athletes were recognized.
The evening opened with acknowledgements of key individuals in support of the high school’s athletic program. Brian Grest, on behalf of the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association, honoured the time and commitment of both the teacher and community coaches.
Deb Hering spoke on behalf of the athletes’ parents. Hering recounted the decision to have her sons Ty, Tristan and Dawson commute to HCI for the football and athletics programs. Given that Ty and Tristan have gone on to success in the Canadian Junior Football League, and given Dawson’s recent acquisition by the Saskatoon Hilltops, Hering says the decision was life-changing.
In one of several touching presentations, Kurt and Celeste Leicht presented the Jacob Leicht Scholarship, in memory of Jacob who was lost in the Broncos bus crash. The recipient, who best emulated the qualities that Jacob brought to the ice and to life, was Dylan Lindal.
Darlene Hinz, the mother of HCI student and Broncos statistician Brody Hinz, joined Marilyn Hay, the mother of late Bolt FM broadcaster Tyler Bieber for the presentation of the Tyler Bieber and Brody Hinz Memorial Awards. The first of the two awards was sponsored by the Football Reporters of Canada. The award was geared to individuals considered to be the best-prepared players and was awarded to Dawson Hewring and Rylan Eckl.
The second of the Tyler Bieber and Brody Hinz Awards was proposed by the American Hockey League Broadcasters. The award was intended for individuals who exemplified an individual who communicated on behalf of the school, either as a speaker or someone who excelled at raising school spirit and awareness in the community. The award went to Nathan Tremblay.
For this year’s guest speaker, HCI selected Brayden Klimosko, Coach and General Manager of the Battlefords North Stars whose stellar run in this year’s SJHL playoffs led to a birth in the Anavet Cup.
Klimosko’s humorous reminiscences of his days in high school sports mixed with sage advice from his perspective as a long time successful hockey coach. He explained how his philosophy in player selection and coaching melded with HCI’s pillars of education. Character qualities like dedication, perseverance and humility are all invaluable in Klimosko’s world.
In the end, the night was one of celebration for all the quality student-athletes from Humboldt Collegiate Institute.
