The Humboldt Golf Club is eyeing up an expansion for its facilities, and has approached the City of Humboldt for a loan to do so. The idea is to modify the existing tent facility which houses major golf club events like the Broncos Memorial Golf Tournament, Big Brother Big Sisters Diva for a Day, and many outside events. The result will be a larger and more versatile facility that will cater to larger events in Humboldt. One such event is the Hunter Brothers concert, attached to this year’s Broncos Memorial Golf Tournament. The event centre would be on the golf course grounds.

The Golf Club approached the  City about a loan for $150,000 dollars. Any loan from the City requires a bylaw passed with a minimum of 10 days public notice. City Council accepted the report as a request, and intends to present an affiliated bylaw at a special meeting of Council on April 11. If passed, the loan would be for a period of 5 years. The anticipated full cost of the project is $513,000 dollars.

Speaking to the request, Mayor Michael Behiel suggested there may be other funding avenues the City might be able to provide the project.

“Although we are proposing a loan agreement, we are factoring other things such as the benefits that the event centre will provide to the City for larger capacity events to be held indoors and outdoors with the use of the Golf Club. If approved, there will be a discount to all the other charitable organizations in town to utilize the facility at a reduced cost.”

The recommendation was adopted at the Monday night meeting.
