It’s all gold smiles for the Humboldt Hitmen 15U volleyball team following their provincial championship top place finish this past weekend.

The event took place in Saskatoon on Saturday, April 29th and Sunday, April 30th. The Hitmen were seeded into division 3 with 25 teams competing. The Humboldt squad found itself pooled in with the other top four teams in the division in round robin play.

The Hitmen got off to a quick start defeating St. Walburg two sets in short order. The tables turned as the girls lost in two sets to rivals Lanigan. They fared better in the next two matches, besting both the Swift Current Junior Sundogs and the Wheatland Attack in three sets each. Those results left the Hitmen second place in their pool and set up for a crossover game on Sunday morning.

An early morning bout against Weyburn and a victory in three sets put the Hitmen in place for a semi-final matchup, once again versus St. Walburg. The Hitmen took out their opponents in two sets.

After a lengthy wait for the other crossover to sift out, the Humboldt team would face Lanigan once again. The first set saw Lanigan fight back from a slow start and fall short of a comeback, losing 25-22. Lanigan gained a measure of revenge in the second set, as the Hitmen rallied to a near comeback, ultimately falling 26-24 in extra points.

In the third and final set, the Hitmen lit up the court with a series of early aces and critical digs. After an exchange of long rallies, the Hitmen came away with a 15-9 win to capture gold.

It was a spectacular season and an even better wrap up for this year’s Humboldt Hitmen 15U girls team.
