The diamonds at Centennial Park will be full on softball excitement this weekend when the best U11 girls' softball teams come together for their provincial tournament. The action gets under way this Friday, according to organizer Dakota Johnson.

“We are hosting one of four U11 girls' provincials for softball in the province this year. We have 18 teams attending this weekend. It works out to about 219 athletes that ‘ll be coming to the community, so we’re really excited to be hosting that.”

The turnout and the quad format speak well to the popularity of softball in the province.

“It was said in a meeting that this is the most teams we’ve had registered for provincials in several years, so it’s really good to see,” says Johnson

The host Humboldt Thunder team gets their tournament under way on Friday morning at 11:00 am. The finals wrap up at 2 pm on Sunday. The opening ceremonies take place at 5:00 pm on Friday, followed by another Humboldt Thunder match.

Calico Gymnastics Club will be running the booth complete with burgers throughout the weekend. Everyone is invited to come out to see the best young softball teams in the province contend for provincial honours.
