Humboldt's Kevin Waugh was one of the rookie Conservative candidates to be elected Monday night.

The veteran sports caster turned in his microphone for a chance to represent Saskatoon-Grasswood which he won with almost 42 percent of the vote.

He says they could see the finish line with about three weeks to go in the campaign.

"It was a great battle, it was a fair battle, nobody did anything contentious over the three months, it was just a great battle between the four of us."

Scott Bell of the New Democrats secured just over 30 percent of the votes, the Liberals Tracy Muggli collected 26.4 percent and Mark Bigland-Pritchard came in fourth with 1.8 percent.

"We got some traction about three weeks ago, we kept that traction and we knew going into the polls Monday we knew we were going to win."

The HCI graduate is very excited for the new venture in the House of Commons but it also means the end of his forty year career in television at CTV Saskatoon.

"When you are in broadcasting you don't make a lot of money, you're not there for that, you are there for the community. Then all of a sudden you do decide to step out and run, it's a tough decision for your family and everyone and all of a sudden the community rallies around you and you win big."

Waugh looked back to his late elementary school days and volunteering with Louis Brann's campaign in the late 60's combining that with a Robert Stanfield rally in Saskatoon that peaked his interest in politics.
