Leonard William Athmer
July 26, 1942 – December 10, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of Leonard William Athmer announces his passing on December 10, 2022. He was 80 years of age. Leonard was born in Watson Saskatchewan on July 26, 1942, to Bernard and Anna (née Nordick-Binsfeld) Athmer of Englefeld, SK. He grew up on the family farm by Englefeld and attended Englefeld school. While helping his dad on the farm, Leonard worked at Breker’s store and made church pews until he took over the farm full time when his parents retired. He married Janet Berg on April 16, 1966, and they moved into the family homestead. They raised chickens and pigs in addition to grain farming. Leonard loved hunting, fishing, spending time with family and friends at Barrier Lake and the hunting cabins up north by Arborfield. The clam chowder and sing-along parties at Barrier were wonderful, with the guitar playing and singing by Ron Nordick and Bernie ven der Buhs. Whenever Leonard was able to, he was at his children’s events and often worked the penalty box at his sons’ hockey games. Leonard also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, riding his gator, gardening, photography, making his own sausage, raising meal worms for fishing, mounting deer and moose horns, making fishhooks, and playing horseshoes, cards and pool. Leonard and Janet spent summers at Barrier Lake where Leonard would fish from sunrise until noon, and sometimes he’d go back out again in the afternoon. He usually caught his limit of fish, and he and his friends would debate on who caught the biggest fish of the day. Leonard was known for his ability to make people laugh and to “find the good when there was bad”. He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by: his wife of 56 years Janet (née Berg) Athmer; four children and their families: Shawn (Gordon) Barkway of Warman, SK, and children: Gregory Barkway of Vancouver, BC, Samantha (Evan) McPhail of Saskatoon, SK, and Rebecca Barkway of Warman, SK; Grant (Brenda) Athmer of Saskatoon, SK; Scott (Heather) Athmer of Watson, SK, and children: Blaise Athmer and Bronwyn Athmer of Watson, SK; Lance (Erin) Athmer of Saskatoon, SK, and children: Colby Athmer and Blake Athmer of Saskatoon, SK; brothers Aloys (Georgia) Athmer of Englefeld, SK; Alphonse (Loretta) Athmer of Englefeld, SK; sisters Anne (Herb) Martin of Humboldt, SK; and Rosella Rath of Humboldt, SK; and sister-in-law Angeline Binsfeld of Humboldt, SK.
