On Thursday evening, the skies cleared, the winds dropped, and a perfect fall evening emerged for our third fall Meal in the Field. The Bolt Cruiser, loaded with a delicious harvest-time family meal, courtesy of the BV, headed to the hamlet of Esk and the Wildeman farm.

The crews had been harvesting in the morning, and following a rain delay, headed back into the combines in the late afternoon. By the time supper arrived, the sun was dipping on a gorgeous prairie night.

“We are about a third done our harvest,” said Todd Wildeman. He, his brother Chris and their families farm about 12,000 acres. “It’s coming off good, mostly dry.” The spring and summer rains treated the area well, for the most part, meaning crops are looking good to this point.

There was an added cause for celebration as Miles Wildeman, Todd’s and Chris’s father was celebrating his birthday. Miles’ wife, Connie, had a special, deliciously spiced cake prepared to share as a birthday treat for all who came. It’s not the first time Miles’ birthday has been celebrated in a field, she laughed.

Thanks to sponsors Hergott Farm Equipment, Horizon Fertilizers, South 20 Dodge and FCC who attended the meal and made it possible. It was another great night sharing the warmth and hospitality with a great farming family at this week’s Meal in the Field.
