You give the North Stars an inch, and they’ll take a mile.

The Broncos hung right with the first-place team in the SJHL through two periods of play. However, in the third, the North Stars capitalized on their chances, leading to a 5-2 victory.

It didn’t start out looking like a game that the Broncos were anywhere near ready for. The North Stars led the shot department 13-4 and had a 2-0 lead just 11 minutes in. Once the Broncos halted the onslaught, they completely flipped the script in the second period.

The middle frame was the Broncos' best period, by far. They supplied constant pressure on the Battlefords’ defence, relentlessly causing the rear guards problems, and stopped the North Stars’ elite transition play in its tracks.

Tyson McLean scored a short-handed goal to cut the lead to 2-1. Then Logan Kurki broke in and slid a shot under the pad of Stars’ goalie Kristian Lyon for a 2-2 tie.

In the third, the Broncos had some of the same pressure that was noticeable in the second but couldn’t capitalize on their chances. Meanwhile, the Stars struck three times throughout the final 20 minutes and skated away with a 5-2 victory.

The North Stars have won all 4 meetings between the two clubs this season.

The Broncos won’t have to wait long to seek revenge, as they’ll host Battlefords the following day to wrap up the home and home set on Saturday, February 1st.
