Pius Houk
February 26, 1941 – July 3, 2022

It is with sadness in their hearts that the family of Pius Houk announces his passing on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at Humboldt District Hospital, in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. He was 81 years of age. Pius was born February 26, 1941, to Anthony and Rose Houk (née Werner) in the Luseland area. He attended school at Nipawin, SK, until he left home. In his younger years, he worked at several jobs as a tinsmith, farmhand, equipment operator at Diefenbaker Dam, and as a carpenter in his own carpentry business. He met the love of his life, and wife of 57 years, Elsie Blumers in Esk, SK, while he was working as a farmhand. On November 7, 1964, they were married and began their life together. After trying several locations and career choices, it was clear that farming and carpentry were Pius’ love and calling. They returned to Esk in 1974, with two more in their family, Wendell and Marjorie. Esk became home and a place where they decided to raise their family while Pius farmed for W.A. Wildeman in the summers and used his carpentry skills in the winter months. It wasn’t until 1982, when he found a long time and everlasting friendship with the Wildeman family, working for Myles and Connie and their two sons, Chris, and Todd. When he wanted to relax, Pius enjoyed watching his hockey and baseball, going to Blair’s for coffee with the boys, and checking the crops with Myles. In his later years, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. Pius will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife, Elsie Houk (née Blumers), his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Wendell (Christine) Houk and family Kien (Heather), Matthew (Jordan), and Kristian, and Marjorie Houk (Ken Schmidt) and family Joelene (Taylor), Willow and Dezek, Kaylyn (Steve) Bartel, Jayden, Samantha, and Daxton; his brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Anthony and Rose Houk (née Werner), and his parents-in-law August and Mildred Blumers (née Wehner). The Funeral Service was held for Pius on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., in the Christian Fellowship Church, in Lanigan, Saskatchewan, with David Kline officiating. Others taking part were pianist Marilyn Kline; scripture readers Joelene Grudnitzki and Kaylyn Bartel; eulogist Myles Wildeman; and memorial table attendants Joanne Deditch and Marianne Pullman. The active pallbearers were: Kien Houk, Matthew Houk, Kristian Houk, Todd Wildeman, Chris Wildeman, and Greg Neugebauer, with Jayden Bartel, Samantha Bartel, Daxton Bartel, Willow Grudnitzki, and Dezek Cobbe noted as honorary pallbearers. A private family interment was held at the Esk Baptist Cemetery, in the Esk district, and the memorial luncheon followed in the Christian Fellowship Church in Lanigan. Memorial donations may be directed to the Lanigan & District Water Park, (c/o Lanigan Town Office, PO Box 280, Lanigan, SK, S0K 2M0), or by e-transfer: laniganwaterpark@gmail.com, or to the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation – Palliative Care, (PO Box 1740, Humboldt, SK, S0K 2A0).
