A massive rain storm on July 28 and many precautionary water advisories made for an interesting past year for the City of Humboldt's Public Works and Utilities department.

Head of the department, Peter Bergquist commended the crew on their efforts in responding to everything they saw.

"We were quite happy with how our public works department performed, how they handled the storm, how they handled the precautionary drinking water advisories, and how they took care of the city in general in 2015."

Throughout the year the department was also able to replace many water mains as well as a loop around water main to improve fire flows on the east end.

Looking ahead to 2016, Bergquist spoke with excitement over what is in the works.

"We will have the upgrades to the water distribution plant where we're going to be adding a reservoir," he continued. "That one is a pretty exciting project for us because we did get the funding from the federal and provincial governments to help us out with this, so we're only paying one-third of the overall project, which is $4.35-million."

In addition to upgrades at the plant, he added that feedback heard from September's open house meeting following the July storm will be put to use.

"That will be a way to help us form some of these issues that we have with sewage back-ups and storm water ponding on the roadways."

Bergquist stated that they are also continually looking into replacing more water mains and keeping sewage, as well as roads under control.
