Raymond Shulhan
May 8, 1934 – March 31, 2022

It is with great sadness the family announced the passing of Raymond Shulhan, 87 years, of Humboldt at Humboldt District Hospital on Thursday, March 31, 2022.

Ray was born May 8, 1934 to Wasyl & Donnia Shulhan on a farm near Guernsey. He quit school after grade 9 to help on the farm and neighbouring farms. Later Alwinsol Potash bought the Shulhan land, along with many neighbouring farms, to start up production and expansion of a potash mine.

In 1964, Raymond and Joyce were married, then bought and remodeled a house in Guernsey. In 1970, their eldest daughter Michelle was born. Rhonda followed soon after in 1971 and Donna in 1975. They operated a mixed farm and did trucking of cattle and hogs, as well as sold cattle feed. Eventually they slowly sold the cattle operation and some land.

All work and no play makes a dull farmer. Ray and Joyce bought their first camper – a little fold down, and many years later upgraded campers. They travelled to many communities following chuckwagon and chariot races. After the first weekend of racing, they were hooked on it! For many years they followed the chuckwagon circuit races each summer, even venturing as far as Ponoka and Calgary Stampede. As their bumper sticker read – “Have camper, will travel” and so they did. This was not the only entertainment they enjoyed, country & gospel jamborees were another interest. The “Polka Fests” were unforgettable – no need to explain the fun they had, making new friends at each dance.

Following the fall harvest, they started touring by bus. Ray and Joyce travelled to Branson twice, Host Fest twice, the maritime provinces, and also to Alaska with their camper.

In the summer, Ray played baseball with the Guernsey Baseball team. As time went by, a few of the Lanigan Players joined and the name changed to “Combines”. Ray also played a little slow pitch, which was a little slower pace for a littler slower players.

In the winter there was curling. Ray took an ice-making course and for many years made ice in Guernsey. He curled with many different curlers and have lots of fun. Travelling to many different communities, Ray always carried a curling bag, as did most others. He always had a deck of cards in his bag with other curling necessities, eg. gloves, curling shoes, sweater, and so on.

When these activities became too strenuous on the body they played pool, cards, board games, and always finished the evening off with lunch and a good old fashion “gab” session. What wonderful times to remember. Often, he got 3 other fellows to play pool and finish the afternoon with a game of Kaiser. One time a batch of warm cinnamon buns arrived to top off their coffee break. How lucky could these men get, they were “on top of the world”.

In 2016, after 52 years of farming, Ray and Joyce packed their belongings and moved to Humboldt to retire at Silver Ridge Heights and then 2 years later to Parkview Place – a lot closer to downtown! They met a lot of new people, who quickly became friends and family – how fortunate could they get?

Ray was the last surviving member of the Shulhan family, which included father and mother – Wasyl and Donnia; siblings John, Mary, Peter, Anne, Olga, Pauline, and Bill, as well has his great grandson Mason.

Raymond will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years Joyce Shulhan; three daughters, two granddaughters, and three great granddaughters: Michelle Ryan (Keith Attrill) and family Keridiss Ryan and her daughters Avalynn and Autumn; and Jamie Ryan and daughter Dallas, all of Calgary, AB; Rhonda Prince (Tyler Gabora) of Blackfalds, AB; and Donna Shulhan of Saskatoon, SK.
