For the month of September, SGI and law enforcement are shining the traffic safety spotlight on impaired drivers, with an emphasis this month on young adults.

“In 2020, 32 percent of all drivers involved in impaired driving collisions in Saskatchewan were between the ages of 18 and 25,” explained Tyler McMurchy, the manager of media relations with the Crown insurance company. He then highlighted the concern behind this, as the age group only makes up 12 percent of the province’s population.

With the emphasis on young adults, SGI is reminding new drivers, such as those 21 and under, or who are learner or novice drivers, that having any amount of alcohol or drugs in the system results in a minimum 60-day license suspension, impoundment of the vehicle and hundreds of dollars in fines.

They recommend finding a safe ride home before heading out for the night, including having a designated driver, or leaving the vehicle at home and taking a taxi.
