SaskTel is warning its customers of a phishing scam.

Recently, the SaskTel.net email has been the subject of a large phishing attack.

Director of External Communications for SaskTel, Michelle Englot says despite the general public's ability to weed out scams, the recent attack appears more realistic then previous ones.

"In this instance it did appear to be fairly legitimate, there were not as many typos as there normally are within a phishing attack. What we have done is we're looking at proactively changing the passwords of the customers who did receive the email."

Phishing is the act of sending an email and falsely claiming to be from a legitimate business, is used to gather personal information with the intent to fraudulently use this information. SaskTel is estimating the scam has effected roughly 1,000 customers.

Englot offered some tips to avoid falling victim to the scam.

"Never give out personal information, do not reply to suspicious messages, don't visit any websites with the suspicious messages linked to them. Delete any of these emails immediately and don't follow up with the person it came from, these are the key things."

SaskTel also urges strong password secrecy.

Englot also added that the crown corporation would never ask for personal or confidential information via email or text.
