The Humboldt Broncos called in some experience for their second preseason game of the season as they squared off with the Nipawin Hawks in the back half of a home and home weekend set on Saturday night.

The Broncos, as opposed to Friday night where they dressed just one 20-year-old, had 12 additional veterans enter the lineup for their first preseason action on Saturday. The influx of experience paved the way to a 4-1 win where they outshot the Hawks 53-21.

Albeit controlling the play and the offensive opportunities for the majority of the first period, Hawks goalie Nolan McDowell kept the game in a 0-0 deadlock heading into the second frame.

It didn’t take long for the Broncos to strike in the second. Cage Newans secured the game’s opening goal on the powerplay assisted by Noah Barlage and Carsten Kayter.

Hawk’s forward, Jonah Fournier would tie the game six minutes later as the only Hawks goal on the night.

With the game tied 1-1, the Broncos offense proved productive in the third as they capitalized on three of their 23 shots in the final frame. Newcomers, both with Jr. A experience, Jace Benvie and Ben Kotylak added their first goals of the preseason in their first game, while Cage Newans capped off the scoring with his second goal on the powerplay.

Tristan Boileau backstopped the Broncos to the 4-1 victory, playing all 60 minutes and stopping 20 of 21 shots.

The Broncos have three preseason games remaining which will start at home against the Melfort Mustangs on Wednesday, September 7th.
