Anyone who has been down at the EPA for pre-season Humboldt Broncos action knows that they’re in for some exciting hockey when the season officially gets under way this Saturday. The Notre Dame Hounds will be on hand for the season opener following the traditional tail gate party at the Uniplex.

The pre-season held a number of victories and some near misses that bode well for the fast paced Broncos’ brand of play. It’s an exercise in sorting and sifting new players, but in the end, head coach Scott Barney is ready for wheels up on the new season.

“We’ve been really happy with a lot of guys’ play. We had a lot of new faces, and we’re getting used to the way those guys play. We’ve given them all the information we can, and we see which guys process it the best. Obviously, we have to make tough decisions in the end, but we’re really happy with the group we have here – definitely a younger group than usual – but we’re excited to see what happens heading into the season.”

The perennial rivals, the Notre Dame Hounds provide the opening opposition on Saturday. Barney says the speed and the evident skating abilities of the new crew will provide a solid challenge for the Hounds. It’s an energy that should translate well for the fans. In addition to an exciting new batch of rookies, there’s the anchor and leadership in the veteran core.

“We’ve got a lot of our veterans back - guys like Newans, Amaral, Bell, Weigel, Myles and players like that on the back end. And Benji (Motew) - it’s good to have that stabilizer in net.”

The balance of the vets and skilled players like American Connor Thue and recently signed Connor Hughes creates a mix that Barney feels will excite fans.

“There’s a lot of good young talent in there for us, and we’re excited for the fans to see them and excited for the players to be involved in our community.”

The excitement outside kicks off at 5 pm with the tailgate party. The City of Humboldt and Modern Meats are sponsoring a great dry ribs and Caesar salad meal. Along with plenty of music, a street hockey set-up and Humboldt Broncos tattoos and colouring pages for the kids.

Don’t miss out on the season opener for the Humboldt Broncos, Saturday night, against the Notre Dame Hounds. Puck drop is at 7 pm and the play call is on 107.5 Bolt FM.
