Tackle Hunger Week kicks off in Wynyard tomorrow, Friday, September 23.

The campaign kicks off with a football game on George Lamb Field in Wynyard, where the Wynyard Golden Bears host the Viscount Vikings in their annual Tackle Hunger Night Game.

“The Tackle Hunger program is a way for WCHS athletes to identify that they can give back to their community. There is a need for food in our local area, there are a lot of patrons who are in tough times and need some assistance,” explained Morris Sokul, head football coach of WCHS.

Those that donate to the campaign can get into the game cheaper.

“If parents give a food item at the gate, they get in for a toonie, and then all proceeds from the game go towards the food bank so they can buy some supplementary goods needed to top off the baskets given to patrons who use the food bank.”

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm, with plenty to do before the game starts.

Pregame activities start at 5:30 pm with a chili bake-off that features 12 gourmet chefs from within the community. One will walk away the chili champ of Wynyard.

“Marea Olafson from Freba Pottery has designed two WCHS alumni bowls that are on sale for $25 as a fundraiser for WCHS.”

Funds from bowls go towards funding the school's van.

“We just had some bad news that our local school van did not pass a safety inspection, so we can no longer use it to help take our players and athletes to games such as Volleyball, and Basketball.”

Day two of the Tackle Hunger Campaign takes place Monday, September 26, as Foam Lake Jr Panthers will go to George Lamb Field to take on the Jr Bears in a Night Jamboree controlled scrimmage at 7:00 pm.

“Fans bringing food items to this event will be admitted for free. 50 - 50 sales will also occur at both games. A huge week of Fundraising at WCHS! George Lamb Field will be the place to be.”
