Broncos rally late to beat Klippers in a shootout
The Humboldt Broncos never held the lead during regulation or in overtime during Tuesday night's matchup with the Kindersley Klippers. But it was the Broncos who walked away with two points, coming from behind to beat the Klippers 5–4 in a shootout. Humboldt trailed 4–2 with just 1:36 remaining in the third period before a late rally saw the green and gold tie the game and send it to extra time. Less than two minutes after the Klippers opened the scoring, the Broncos responded as Jacob Strizzi netted his SJHL-leading 15th goal of the season. Before the end of the first period, Kindersley regained the lead thanks to Wil Christian, and Humboldt went into the intermission down by one. The lone goal of the second period came from Connor Miller, his sixth of the season, tying the game 2–2. Rylan Wieler put the Klippers back in front with a power-play marker. Kindersley extended its lead shortly after, with the Perlinger twins contributing—Cobe scored his second goal of the season. With just over 90 seconds left, Rylan Hue cut the Broncos' deficit to one, muscling the puck over the goal line. Thirty-four seconds later, Jeter Korte knocked a rebound into the back of the net to tie the game. Overtime solved nothing, sending the game to a shootout. Both teams were shut down in the first two rounds. In the third round, Miller scored for the Broncos, while Avery Johnson was denied for the Klippers, securing the win for Humboldt. Nick Kotai made 28 saves, along with three more stops in the shootout. Strizzi had a four-point night (1G–3A) and reclaimed his spot as the SJHL’s points leader with 23 (15G–8A). Miller added two points (1G–1A). Humboldt went 0-for-9 on the power play, while Kindersley was 1-for-5. With the win, the Broncos moved one point ahead of the Klippers for top spot in the Nutrien Division and second place overall in the SJHL standings with 18 points. The Broncos are back in action Friday night when they host the Nipawin Hawks. Coverage on Bolt FM and DiscoverHumboldt.com begins at 7:15.
