Division rivals collide: Broncos and North Stars face off twice this weekend
A divisional home and home set is on tap for the Humboldt Broncos this weekend as they renew acquaintances with the Battlefords North Stars. The Broncos will head to Battlefords tonight with North Stars travelling to Humboldt tomorrow Friday night’s contest will mark the first of eight battles between the two Nutrien Division rivals. Last year, the North Stars edged out the Broncos by a single point for the Division title. The Broncos will try and ride the momentum they created on Tuesday night as they snapped a three-game losing skid with a 5-3 victory over the Flin Flon Bombers. Humboldt handed the Bombers their first loss of the regular season, a little bit of revenge for eliminating the green and gold in last year’s playoff. Forward Jacob Strizzi will head into Friday night’s game with hot stick. The 20-year-old scored for the third straight game on Tuesday. It’s early, but Strizzi is averaging a goal per game through the first nine games of the 2025-26 SJHL season. He sits third overall in points with 11 (9G-2A). Defenceman Tyrone Sobry continues to make an instant impact with the Broncos. After being reassigned from the Prince Albert Raiders last Thursday, Sobry immediately stepped into Humboldt’s lineup on Friday. He scored his first goal as a Bronco on Saturday and followed up with two more against the Bombers, including a highlight reel that sparked Humboldt’s offence. After allowing two goals against the Bombers, goalie Charlie Tritt continued his strong play to begin the season, only allowing one more goal as he played a pivotal role in the green and gold. Through seven games, Tritt has a 5-2 record with a 2.12 GAA and a .944 SV %. The recent history between the Broncos and North Stars favours Humboldt. Last year, the Broncos were 5-2-0-1. Over the last five years, Humboldt has the edge over Battlefords 17-9-0-2 record, including a 9-5 record inside the Access Communications Centre. After their first five games of the year, the North Stars are sitting at .500 with a 2-2-1 record. Last weekend they dropped both games against the Melfort Mustangs. Coverage for tonight’s game on Bolt FM and Discoverhumboldt.com begins at 7:15, with the opening faceoff is 7:30. Tonight’s guest in the second intermission will be Humboldt’s Logan Barlage, a former player in the Western Hockey League and currently a member of the University of Regina Cougars hockey team.
