Humboldt Broncos off and running with the preseason underway
The puck has dropped on the 2025-26 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season for the Humboldt Broncos Last weekend, the Broncos hit the ice for the first time as a squad as they took part in their annual fall camp. In the final scrimmage, Team Green came from behind to win the 2025 Elgar Petersen Cup, defeating Team Gold 4-3. One of the standouts of the game was forward Tyce Penrod, who opened the scoring a minute into the scrimmage. Throughout the 60 minutes, Penrod displayed a physical edge, throwing around the body. He says that he plans on providing an aggressive style for the Broncos this year. “I’m always going to hit,” he added, “the best defence is good body.” The 2007-born forward enters his second full season with the Broncos, noting that his confidence has grown significantly since last year. “The start of last season was not that good, as I started carrying the puck more, had more confidence, I just got better throughout the year, and I think I can carry that over into this year.” In his rookie campaign in the SJHL, Penrod scored a pair of goals but plans on increasing that total this year. It was a quick start to the preseason for the Broncos, beginning on Sunday where they were defeated by the Melville Millionaires 4-3 in a shootout in a game with a younger group of players. On Wednesday night, the rookie players got another chance on the ice, this time in Kindersley as the Klippers defeated the Broncos 3-1. While the rookies had the first chance to hit the ice for game action, the veterans continued their preparations for the upcoming season with workouts both on and off the ice. One of the 20-year-old veteran players returning to the Broncos this year, Brayden Skogstad has been pleased with the team’s effort through the first week of camp. “I think we've got a hardworking team that's going to bring a lot of intensity and compete to the Broncos this year.” Since the first practice, the Kelowna BC product says the pace has picked up with each session. “You see guys battling for spots out there and even if guys who might already think they're on the team, they're battling for their spot on the team, whether that be power-up or penalty kill, whatever it is, showing the coach what they have, and I think it's really good to see out there.” The veteran players will begin drawing into the lineup for the Broncos. Skogstad is excited to face some teams with different uniforms. “There's a lot of new faces in the league that'll bring a lot of skill and I'm excited to see what the other teams are able to bring.” On Friday, the Broncos will make their first trip to Warman to square off with the Wolverines. The two teams will meet again the following day, this time in Humboldt, as Bronco fans will get their first chance to see the squad in game action. Saturday’s game will begin at 7:30, as the Broncos will be moving the opening faceoff to that time slot throughout the 2025-26 season. In two weeks, the Broncos and Wolverines will once again meet in a home and home set, this time it will count in the standings as the new season officially gets underway.
