Bernard John Niekamp
March 18, 1920 – August 1, 2016

The death of Bernard Niekamp of Humboldt, SK (and formerly of Annaheim, SK) occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on August 1, 2016.  He was 96 years of age.  Bernard was the youngest child born to Clemens and Maria (nee Schlomer) Niekamp in Essen, Oldenburg, Germany.  In 1928 at the age of eight, he immigrated to Canada with his parents, brothers and sisters. The Niekamp family purchased a homestead between the Annaheim and St. Gregor districts where Bernard continued his education in the nearby country school of Arras.  As a young man Bernard served in WW II in the army.  On October 7th, 1946 Bernard married Anna (nee Crone).  Bernard and Anna purchased land southwest of Annaheim where they raised their nine children.  In 1974 Bernard and Anna left the farm and moved to Annaheim where they built a new home.  Bernard while in Annaheim worked for Doepker Industries until his retirement.  Bernard and Anna continued to live in Annaheim until 2007.  At this time they purchased a condo in Humboldt where he resided until his death.  Bernard had a great passion for fishing.  He along with Anna would travel to various lakes in northern Saskatchewan.  They also had a place at Barrier Lake where they would spend countless hours fishing.  Bernard also took pride in gardening.  When not fishing or gardening he loved to travel.  Bernard and Anna enjoyed numerous trips to his homeland of Germany and also driving throughout Canada and the United States.  Bernard will be lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 70 years, Anna (nee Crone) Niekamp; five sons and four daughters:  Dennis (Anna) Niekamp of Humboldt, SK; Richard (Mary) Niekamp of St. Brieux, SK; Irene (David) Thiemann of St. Gregor, SK; Donna (William) Lueke of Humboldt, SK; David (Jane) Niekamp of Humboldt, SK; Sharon (Dennis) Knittig of Annaheim, SK; Jerome (Gladys) Niekamp of Martensville, SK; Marilyn (Charles) Emmons of Annaheim, SK; and Harvey (Laura) Niekamp of Lyalta, AB; and numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and  nieces and nephews.  Bernard was predeceased by his parents Clemens and Maria (nee Schlomer) Niekamp; two sisters: Johanna (Joseph) Nienaber and Maria (Henry) Nienaber; and three brothers: Henry Niekamp (in infancy; in Germany), Joseph (Bernadine) (Isabelle) Niekamp and Clemens (Katherine) Niekamp.  The Funeral Mass was offered from St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church on Saturday August 6, 2016 at 9:45 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Greg Smith-Windsor, and concelebrated by Fr. Rudolph Novecosky, OSB, and Fr. Daniel Muyres, OSB.  Others taking part were: Darcy Thiemann, crossbearer; Henry Nienaber and Martin Nienaber, scripture readers; Martin Nienaber, intentions; David and Jane Niekamp, giftbearers; Dora Kiefer, Henry Nienaber and Martin Nienaber, eucharistic ministers; Mel and Josie Stroeder, memorial table attendants.  Music ministry was provided by Loretta Schugmann, director; Dolores Hinz, organist; Anna Marie Moellenbeck, soloist; and members of the St. Augustine Parish Choir.  An honor guard was formed by members of the Knights of Columbus.  Honorary pallbearers were “all those who shared in Bernard’s life.”  Urnbearer was Dennis Niekamp.  Interment followed at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Annaheim, SK.  Memorial donations may be directed to the St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Cemetery Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society.
