Evelyn Zerff

April 10, 1928 – November 3, 2018

Evelyn “Ev” (nee Freistadt) Zerff of Humboldt, SK, passed away at Humboldt District Hospital on Saturday, November 3, 2018. She was 90 years of age. Ev was born to Gottleib and Frances (nee Heibert) Freistadt on April 10, 1928, at Humboldt. She grew up on the family farm near Carmel, SK, and attended Carmel School. Following the premature death of her mother, Ev quit school at the age of 13 to help care for her siblings.
On April 26, 1945, Ev married Peter Zerff. They started a family shortly after, and Ev chose to stay home and raise their three daughters. As well, over the years, she helped raise some nieces and nephews, and looked after an uncle of hers. When the family expanded to include grandchildren, Ev kept busy with them. In her leisure time, her greatest passions were crocheting and doing seamstress work. Another favorite hobby was collecting spoons and bells.
In 1951, Ev and Peter moved from the farm into a house they built in Humboldt. Peter passed away on April 22, 2002. Ev continued to live in their home until moving into the Enriched Housing part of St. Mary’s Villa. When that section of the Villa closed, she relocated to Caleb Village and, finally, to the Harry Ford Centre, where she resided for the past seven years. As her health began to fail, she was hospitalized until her passing.
