Gwen Meisner
August 5th, 1930 - December 24, 2016

Gwen was born in Neudorf, Saskatchewan August 5, 1930 to Margaret Penny who was a teacher, and Stafford Ford who was a pharmacist.  She passed away peacefully Dec 24, 2016 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Gwen grew up in Neudorf and attended the local school until she left for QDS (Qu’Appelle Diocesan School) an Anglican residential school in Grade 10. We wonder if she was sent due to her wild curly hair and mischievous spirit! Her family had a cabin at Katepwa Lake and they spent many happy summers there. She attended the three year residency nurses training program at Regina General Hospital.  Gwen was a proud and competent Registered Nurse, working at Neudorf Hospital, Regina General Hospital, Strasbourg Senior’s Home, Lanigan Hospital, and as an on-site nurse for Kilborn Construction.  Emil Meisner and Gwen were married in Neudorf on April 5, 1953.  Gwen will be lovingly remembered by her family, husband of 63 years Emil; five children and their families:  Rae Broda (Bernie) and children Erin Broda (Chris Wanless), Kelly Swanson (Jason and son Logan), Kristen Dollansky (Steven); Shelagh Meisner and children Spencer Meisner (Brittany), and Keira Meisner; Janet Haryett (David) and children Brieanna Osier (Mike and children Audessa, Ronan, Jade), and Patrick Haryett; Joan Ooms (Dwayne Kupchanko and his daughter Taylor), and children Heather Ooms, Sabrina Ooms (Lane Renskers and his children Clarissa and Gracie); Bruce Meisner (Mariette McDermid and her daughter Jillian); and sisters, Beth Urquhart (Fred) and Jean Fennell (Austin). Gwen belonged to many groups and organizations: OES (recently received her Lifetime Membership), Daughters of the Nile, many community and church choirs, UCW, Last Mountain Music Festival. She led 4-H, Explorers, the Youth Choir in Strasbourg, and mentored Candy Stripers in Lanigan. She was happy to fill in as organist whenever she was asked.  Her favourite things included family, music, warm weather, travelling, shopping. “Sometimes I would just window shop but I think Slim would disagree!” Some of her favourite places were campgrounds (her love of camping began as a young child), winters in Texas, and the Okanagan Valley. Hobbies included playing cards, dancing, music, knitting, crafts with grandchildren, oil painting. Mom was clear to remind us that housework was never one of her hobbies – “my house is clean enough to be healthy but messy enough to be happy”. Gwen’s fondest memory was of nurturing her family of five children and seeing her children proudly raising their families. She found inspiration in her parents, her husband, and her Grandma Penny. She wants her kids to remember her for being a good example of a nurse who loved her work; and promoting musical talents in youth.  The Funeral Service was held on Friday Jan 6, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Lanigan Knox United Church with Jeanette Warrian presiding. An Honour Guard was formed by members of the Order of The Eastern Star.  If you would like, donations may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan 301-2550 -12th Avenue Regina, SK S4P3X1 or Canadian Cancer Research Society at 200 Isabella Street, Suite 305, Ottawa, Ontario K1S 1V7.
