Faith Ione Waldal
July 1, 1932 – April 7, 2016

It is with sorrow that the family announces the death of Faith Ione (nee Grosenick) Waldal of Lanigan, SK, which occurred on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at the Lanigan Hospital. She was 83 years of age. Ione was born on July 1, 1932, at Radville, SK.  She grew up on the family farm north of Lake Alma, SK, where she loved horseback riding, working with animals, and helping her “Daddy”.  Ione remembered winter activities such as sleigh rides, skiing, skating, making caves and snow houses in the high snow banks but she hated all the long underwear, brown stockings and bloomers you had to wear. She enjoyed spending vacation time at her Grandpa and Grandma Ror’s and having lots of family visit them at her home during the summer so had lots of cousins to play with. Ione attended grades 1 to 9 at Pepper Country School, grades 9 and 10 by correspondence, and grades 11 and 12 in Lake Alma. She remembers the dirty thirties: wind and dirt everywhere, and selling gopher tails for one cent each; World War II:  war time Victory bonds, food rationing, food coupons, and preparing care packages for soldiers overseas.  Ione was a talented back catcher and loved softball.  She attended Normal School in Moose Jaw and taught all grades for a year at Romford Country School near Bromhead, SK. On August 9, 1952, Ione Grosenick married Elton Waldal in Weyburn. They lived briefly in Regina prior to moving to Colgate in 1953, where she was a homemaker and assisted Elton with his school janitor work. In 1966, the family moved to Esterhazy where Elton worked on the construction of the potash mine. The family moved to Lanigan in 1969, where Elton worked at PCS, Lanigan Division, and retired in 1992. Ione was an incredible cook, famous for her cinnamon buns. She canned and froze pounds of vegetables grown in their gardens. She was an immaculate house keeper. Ione sewed lots of clothes for her children, grandchildren, and for their dolls, and she was famous for her mending and darning socks. Ione loved to read - especially the newspaper, but also enjoyed magazines and books.   She also liked to watch TV: Heartland, figure skating, curling, Days of Our Lives, The Bold and the Beautiful and, recently, Mrs. Brown’s Boys, but nothing with killing or violence. Ione was gentle, kind, honest, caring and loving. She loved to attend or follow her families’ activities and was proud of all their accomplishments.  “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.”  Ione is survived by eight children, 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren:   Sandy (Randy) Ewert of Saskatoon and family, Geoff (Amanda) Ewert and children Ashley, Logan and Cole of Regina, Jodie (Blair) Molsberry and children Taylor, Kyden, Jordice, Callum and Thadeus of Humboldt,  and James (Amber) Ewert and children Beckett and Finley of Saskatoon; Barb (Dale) Tait of Regina and  family, Rebecca (Drew) Jackiw and children Ryleigh and Holden of Medicine Hat, AB, and Victoria Tait (Ryan Matte) of Regina; Wayne (Charlene) Waldal and family, Stacey Waldal (Ryan McLennan), Jennifer (Dan) McFee and son Kale, and Samantha Waldal, all of Calgary; Pam (Bill) Nikolaisen of Saskatoon and family, Melanie Schmidt (Russ Barber) of Calgary, Kent (Kristie) Schmidt and daughter Ellie, Landie (Shannon) Nikolaisen and daughter Keira all of Saskatoon, and Daniel (Amber) Nikolaisen and children Kershire and Lucius of Martensville; Shelley (Neil) Ewen of Drake and family, Erin (Ryan) Richard and children Jaxton, Macen and Bentley, Kari Ewen and son Ryan, all of Drake,  Jesse Ewen of Saskatoon, and Danny Ewen  of Estevan; Rodney Waldal of Lanigan; Odin (Jayne) Waldal and family, Jazmine and Fayth; and Barry Waldal (Jen Burlingham) and daughter Summer all of Calgary; one sister Joan Thue of Radville; one brother Gordon Grosenick of Beaubier; sisters-in-law:  Florence Waldal of Lanigan, Ione Wanner and Inis (Art) Marcotte, all of Saskatoon, and Yvonne Grosenick of Regina; brothers-in-law: Casper (Loret) Waldal of Regina; Wally Waldal of Nanaimo, BC; forever friend, Marcella Makelki  of Weyburn; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
