Mary Hoffman
August 29, 1936 – September 29, 2018

Mary Annie Hoffman, 82 years of Regina and formerly of Watson, SK, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon on Saturday, September 29, 2018. Mary Annie Hoffman was born on August 29, 1936 near Watson, Saskatchewan. She grew up on the family farm, the fourth child of Ukrainian immigrants John and Rose Chomakewich. It was a time when students rode horses to school – in fact, later in life, she rediscovered her love of horses and horseback riding. Mary never forgot her roots; her Ukrainian culture was extremely important to her. In her sixties, she travelled with her sister Kay to Ukraine. She also took Ukrainian language classes for many years, proudly retaining fluency in her first language. After having four children and being a homemaker, Mary returned to the workforce, first doing office work before embarking on a successful career as a Realtor in Regina, where she lived most of her life. When she eventually retired, she just seemed to have more to do – working on her golf game, painting landscapes, volunteering at the Pasqua Hospital Gift Shop as well as at the Regina Floral Conservatory – making many friends along the way. During the years she owned her two Morgan mares, Nellie and Dee, Mary could often be found at the barn or on a trail ride with friends. For the past 20 years, Mary lived in a character home in Regina’s Cathedral area; her yard was a labour of love as she endeavoured to fill every flower bed with just the right combination of plants and shrubs. She also looked forward to gathering with friends to visit and watch Rider games – with the amount of visiting depending on how well the Riders were playing. Mary’s kids and grandkids were the most important part of her life and she kept up-to-date with their lives, whether they lived near or far. When her health declined earlier this year, Mary moved to Saskatoon to be closer to family. She passed away on September 29 with her kids at her side. During her illness, Mary appreciated the compassion and expertise of the palliative home care nurses and the staff at the St. Paul’s Palliative Care Unit. Mary was predeceased by her parents, John and Rosalia Chomakewich; her siblings Nick, Kay, Lil and Elaine; and the father of her children, Leo Hoffman. Mary will be loved and remembered by her younger brother Emil (Irene) and by her children and grandchildren: Brian, his wife Denise Frenette, and their son Sean; Barry, his wife Shelley, and their children Dana, Chris, Elijah (Camealia and daughters Leah and Myah) and Micah; Deanna Durocher, her husband Normand, and their children Gabrielle, Etienne and Stephane; and Donella Hoffman, her husband Cam Fuller, and their children Joseph and William. Mary will also be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, who she always enjoyed reconnecting with at the Chomakewich family reunions. The Funeral Mass for Mary was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 2, in her hometown of Watson, Saskatchewan at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church. Interment followed at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Cemetery. Donations in Mary’s memory may be sent to the Hospitals of Regina Foundation – Hospital Auxiliaries.
