Mervyn Woods

March 9, 1938 – August 8, 2016

The death of Mervyn Woods of LeRoy, SK  occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Monday, August 8, 2016.  He was 78 years of age.  Mervyn was born on Wednesday, March 9, 1938 to Richard and Frances (nee McKay) Woods, the youngest of six children. He attended Newnham Country School in the LeRoy District and later LeRoy high school, graduating in 1955. Mervyn was accepted  to go to the University of Saskatchewan for agriculture, but after one year decided to become a concrete plant operator with his brother  Bob, working all over Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In the winter when it got too cold to pour concrete they came home and  played hockey for the LeRoy Braves.  In 1964 after Bob passed away in a tragic small airplane accident, Mervyn decided to go to Chilliwack, B.C. where he and his brother George started their own mink ranch.  In 1965 Mervyn met Sandra Kerr and they were married in October 1966. They bought a house and started raising a family, consisting of Bob who was born in January, 1968 and was named after Mervyn's brother,  Brad was born in May, 1969 and Wendy in June, 1971.  In June 1972, Mervyn and Sandra decided the best place to raise a family was back on the farm at LeRoy so they bought a section of land and started a mixed farming operation with Mervyn's brother Frank.   Mervyn and Sandra also had time to have three more children; Fern  in 1973, Heather in 1975, and Lance in 1982. From 1972 to 1995 along with farming, Mervyn spent many hours coaching and managing teams that involved his children such as hockey, baseball, ringette, and softball. Sports was a huge part of his and their family's life and Mervyn loved sports and competition.  In 1999 Mervyn had to retire  from farming after a back operation and  a hip replacement.  Mervyn enjoyed a good game of golf  and with living so close to Leisure Land, it made it easy for him to get to the golf course. Mervyn and Sandra enjoyed  sports and thoroughly loved to watch and follow  their children and grandchildren grow up and  participate in all their sport activities and ensuing careers following the "Woods" tradition.  Mervyn is lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of almost 50 years Sandra (nee Kerr) Woods; their children: Bob (Mary Sue) Woods and their family Brendan and Colin; Brad (Caryn) Woods and their family Elizabeth, Jake, and Josh; Wendy Woods (Kevin Thomson) and her family Evan and Kent Blackley; Fern (Kelsey) Lindal and their children  Shaun, Dylan, and Tyler; Heather (Terrill) Johnson and their family Paige, Brook and Cole; and Lance Woods.  Mervyn is also survived by his brother George Woods; his sister Winnie Cannon; and numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.  Mervyn was predeceased by his parents Richard and Frances (nee McKay) Woods; his brothers: Robert, Douglas and Frank Woods; and a grandson, Alex McKay Blackley.  A celebration of life was held on Friday, August 12, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the LeRoy School at LeRoy, Saskatchewan officiated by Lance Woods. Rev. Brian Unger and Page Johnson provided  scripture readings and devotional.  A Eulogy was given by Lance Woods.    Honorary pallbearers were:  Terry McGrath, Myron Johnson, Lorne Johnson, Ralph Loeffler, and “all those who shared in Mervyn’s life.”  Urnbearer was Brendan Woods.  Interment followed at Newnham Cemetery in the LeRoy District, SK.  Memorial donations may be directed to the Raise the Roof Fundraising Committee (new LeRoy Rink).
