Antonia (Anne) Hergott

Antonia (Anne) was born December 3, 1929 to Anton and Elisabeth (nee Kalthoff) Duerr on the family homestead, one mile south of Old Fulda. She was the 4th youngest child of a family of 11. Anne attended Espen School completing her Grade 10 before moving to Humboldt where she completed high school. Anne attended Normal School, and at the age of 16 was sent to Foam Lake by train to begin her teaching career. She later relocated to Carmel and taught at Valley View School for three years. She boarded with the Hepp family, and her brother Henry asked Harold to take Anne home to Humboldt for the weekend. Six months later they were wed at St. Augustine R.C. Parish on July 24, 1950. They lived in Humboldt for three years, followed by a move to Bruno where they lived for 11 years. Anne taught at St. Quentin School for two and a half years. In 1964, they moved back to Humboldt. Two years later she began teaching at St. Dominic, then continued her career at St. Augustine where she taught Grade 8 until she retired in 1987. While raising the children and teaching, she furthered her education by taking summer school and night classes.
Anne enjoyed gardening, crocheting, word and jigsaw puzzles and reading. As a member of the St. Augustine Parish book club, she looked forward to the group discussions and continued enrichment. Her faith was very important to her. Her daily spiritual reading helped her cope with life’s challenges. Anne and Harold enjoyed travelling which included a trip to the Maritimes, and three winters spent in California. Time shared with her family brought her the most happiness and peace. She spent many hours preserving produce from her garden, baking bread and buns, making popcorn balls and her famous “Krautkruegers”. Anne was able to live independently until her recent illness.
Antonia (Anne) will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband of 68 years HAROLD A.
