Edna Meikle
Nov. 26, 1919 – July 19, 2016

Mrs. Edna Annie Meikle (nee Ritz), 96 years, of St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt and formerly of Lockwood, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 with her family by her side. Edna was born on November 26, 1919 at home on the farm in the Lockwood district. She was the seventh of eight children born to Edwin and Jennie (nee McFarland) Ritz. Edna grew up on the farm and attended Wilmot School in the area. On December 3, 1955, she married Ernest James “Lester” Meikle and they settled on a farm in the Lockwood area where they farmed together and raised their family. She grew a large garden each year and kept busy preserving its bounty. Her happiest times were when she was surrounded by her family and she was cooking a meal for them.  Over the past 9 years, as her health declined she moved to Drake, LeRoy and finally Humboldt where she lived until the present. Edna will be lovingly remembered by her five children: Peggy Montague, Betty Ann (Gordon) Howat, Earl (Beth), Lois (Kurt) Chalmers and Jim (Cindy); numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Pedersen and Alda Birtles and many nieces and nephews.  Edna was predeceased by her parents, Edwin and Jennie Ritz; husband Lester Meikle; son-in-law Murray Montague; brothers Merner, Perry and Louis Ritz; and sisters Anita Forner and Ethel Forner. Edna’s family wish to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at St. Mary’s Villa for the excellent care she received while a resident there. The Funeral Service for Edna was held on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Nokomis United Church, officiated by Jack Robson. Interment followed in the Lockwood Cemetery. Memorial Donations in Edna’s memory may be made to the Lockwood Cemetery or Nokomis United Church.
