Roman Rudolph Sarauer

August 9, 1921 – May 1, 2017

Roman Rudolph Sarauer of Humboldt, SK, passed away at St. Mary’s Villa, Humboldt, at the age of 95. He was born on the family farm near Annaheim to John and Mary Sarauer. Roman returned from serving overseas with the Regina Rifles in WWII and was proud to have been part of the repatriation of Belgium. Many years later Roman and Dolores returned to Belgium and met with the family where he was billeted while serving in the Army.  Roman and Dolores (Mamer)  married on July 2, 1946 in Lake Lenore. They farmed and raised their family in the St. James district. They had an active social life which included square dancing and playing cards with neighbours. They enjoyed travelling and took several trips out of the country including Europe, Hawaii, and other states in the USA.  Roman stayed in contact with his American cousins and they spent many hours comparing farms, crops and yields.  Their last journey to the USA was for a Sarauer Reunion in Bloomer, Wisconsin.  He was very proud that the Canadian branch of the family won the dumpling making contest.  Roman and Dolores moved to Annaheim in 1980 and participated in the New Horizon's Senior Center (Granny's Disco) activities, and travelled annually to Craven to volunteer with the KC's.  Roman and Dolores moved to Humboldt in 1993.  Roman took up curling in a serious way during that time of his life.  He recorded every game and kept records of over 2000 games played. Roman was a lifelong diarist.  He documented rainfall, family events, and their many social activities all in his little five-year diaries of which there are many volumes.  Dolores passed away on June 27, 2009. Roman moved to Caleb Village in 2011 where he enjoyed many Kaiser tournaments. He spent the last year of his life at St. Mary’s Villa. Roman spent most of his time on the farm and helped there until he was 90. He was especially proud when the 3rd generation began to farm.  He cherished his trips to check crops and always knew whose field he was looking at.  Roman is survived by eight children and 19 grandchildren:   daughter  Donelda Richmond (Graham) of Abbotsford and family, Cory (Kiley) and Jamie (Holly); son Leslie (Deborah) of Humboldt and family, Bryan (Karrie) and Kenneth (Kim); son Glen (Donna) of Outlook and family, Greg, Russell (Lisa) and Andrew; [daughter Marilyn deceased 1953]; son Kevin (Donna) of Saskatoon and family, Aaron (Jenelle) and Bradley (Holly); [son Elmer deceased 2009] (Pat) of Saskatoon and family, Michael  (Allison) and Joseph (Alle); son Darryl of Saskatoon and family, Lindsay and Ryan; son Owen (Donna) of Regina and family, Nicole (Jared) and Stacey (Brett); daughter Lou Anne Turcotte (Brian) of Saskatoon and family, Leah and Jordan; and daughter Rhonda Chorney (Kevin) of Winnipeg and family, Paul and Kyle; and by 11 great-grandchildren.
