Ruth Hein

July 28, 1935 – May 28, 2016

Ruth Hein was born in the free city of Danzig (Gdansk, Poland today) on July 28, 1935.   In 1945, Ruth, her mother, stepfather, Herman Epp and step sister escaped from Germany to Denmark arriving on the day the war ended.  Here, a post war concentration camp became their home for the next couple of years.  In 1948, as sponsored refugees, Ruth and her family immigrated to her beloved Canada.   She and her family eventually ended up in Jansen, Saskatchewan where she became the wife of local farm boy Wilfred Hein on October 22, 1952 at the age of 17.  In the following years allergy issues sent Ruth and Wilf from their Jansen farm home to Moose Jaw for work and then back again. Then in 1966, they finally picked up their house, and livestock and moved, to a quarter of sand and alfalfa near Guernsey to build the life of their dreams.  Dad’s dream was to provide for his family by building up an Ayrshire dairy herd and as always, Mom’s dream was her hope that this plan would keep everything in her world perfect and secure forever!!  With her husband ‘on the road’ quite a bit, Ruth’s creativity, efficiency and perseverance were the perfect qualities for a fulltime partner in dream building. Between the years of 1954 and 1969 Ruth gave birth to 6 children; 3 boys and 3 girls. Ruth put in a lot of overtime; from being active in the care and milking of the cattle, feeding and caring for the large family, growing a garden, sewing clothing for the family, planting trees, landscaping, keeping the books and ensuring the children received the proper religious and public education.  And she still managed the time to always make life special – she sewed her girls new outfits for special occasions and always enjoyed keeping things fresh and modern by trying new recipes when they arrived on the scene, sewing something ‘vogue’ or adding new twists to a traditional celebration.  Ruth was very creative and a fixer-upper, we learned from her to make ‘silk purses from sow’s ears.’  Through hard work and dedication, Ruth and Wilf’s dream becomes reality and retirement is more than they hoped for. Over the years that follow, they enjoy travel and spend hours working in the yard/garden together.   We are proud when their garden is published in Garden’s West.  Ruth’s baking gains a reputation with her grandkids and her talents come through again as she sings background for Wilfred when they record the CD, My Life is a Dream.  Children and grandchildren alike, we were always impressed by our Ruth’s stamina, energy, and efficiency, still more energetic than most of us even after her cancer diagnosis at the age of 80. We admired her much.  We will miss her.  Ruth was grateful that her last days would be spent in the home and loving care of her daughter Natalie.  She peacefully passed away there on May 28, 2016.   Ruth is survived by her brother Hans (Vera) Epp and her sisters, Christiane (Peter) Duchinskey, and Cornelia/Corey (Douglas) Stuart.  She will be missed by her children: Carol-Ann (Darrell) Sill, Garth (Brenda) Hein, Stan (Shelley) Hein, James (Rhoda) Hein,  Natalie (Lionel) Lohman, Jennifer (Richard) Boire.  Also remembering Ruth are 22 grandchildren and 13+ great grandchildren!  The Funeral Service for Ruth was held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from Trinity Lutheran Church, Lanigan, officiated by Pastor Ron Bestvater.  Interment took place at Jansen Cemetery, Jansen, SK.  Memorial Donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Canadian Lutheran World Relief.
