Wanting more veteran depth on his blue line, Humboldt Broncos General Manager Darcy Haugan was busy this week making a move to do just that.

Haugan and the Broncos have acquired 20 year-old rearguard Parker Wakaruk from the Grand Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

"We've been looking to add another veteran defenseman to our back end," Haugan said Thursday. "Obviously with the injury to Corey Dambrauskas we were looking for a guy that can play physical, a guy that can bring a lot of leadership and character to our dressing room. We feel that Parker fits that bill."

The optimism is shared by the 6', 185 pound former captain of the AAA Midget Lethbridge Hurricanes.

"I'm pretty excited to be part of the organization. I had a great time in Grande Prairie for the past two seasons but I am excited to start something new."

Wakaruk played 110 games with the Storm compiling nine points and 170 penalty minutes.

"From watching the tape he plays with an edge, he competes real hard," Haugan added. "The other big thing that I really liked about him is he is extremely loyal, that resonated right down to his midget AAA coach and obviously with the tough years they had up in Grande Prairie."

It's no secret the Broncos struggled in their own end last year giving up the second most goals in the league overall.

Wakaruk feels his type of game can help correct that.

"I'm more of a shut down defensive type of guy, play hard in the corners. I'm looking to put up more numbers this year and show more offensive ability but I am a stay at home type guy."

The deal is for future considerations.

Wakaruk played his AAA midget with current Bronco Laramie Kostelansky so he has some familiarity to the organization despite never being to Saskatchewan before.
